Untangled Hair Studio Social Media Facelift

Overview

Untangled Hair Studio is a curly hair-focused salon based in Midland Park, New Jersey. The studio specializes in textured hair services and aims to create a welcoming, educational, and empowering environment for clients.

While the studio had strong in-person results and loyal clients, its social media presence did not reflect the quality of work being done. There was a clear opportunity to use platforms like Instagram to showcase stylist work, attract new clients, and build a recognizable brand voice.

The Problem

The salon lacked a consistent social media presence because of a lack of time in the day. 

Key challenges included:

  • Limited time for the owner to manage content

  • Inconsistent posting and lack of a content strategy

  • Minimal visibility for stylists’ work because of infrequent posting schedule

  • Missed opportunities to attract new clients through digital platforms

Without a structured approach, Untangled’s online presence did not match the quality or personality of the brand

The Objective:

To build a consistent, engaging, and strategic social media presence that reflects Untangeld’s expertise and personality. My goals were to showcase stylist work, increase post visibility and brand awareness through social media, and develop a mix of entertaining and educational content.

Content Strategy

I developed a structured content strategy to balance different types of posts and keep the feed engaging and consistent.

Core content pillars included:

  • Before & Afters: showcasing transformations and results

  • Process Reels: highlighting techniques and behind-the-scenes work

  • Fun Reels: trending, personality-driven content to increase reach

  • Informational Graphics: educational content about curly hair care

This mix ensured the account remained both informative and entertaining.

Content Creation

I have been responsible for capturing some content including final product photos, filming video content during appointments, editing photos and videos for social media, and designing supporting graphics for static posts and carousels. Content was created with platform performance in mind, prioritizing vertical video and visually engaging formats.

Posting & Optimization

I maintained a consistent posting schedule and adjusted content based on performance. This included tracking engagement and reach, leaning into video content for increased visibility, repeating that resonated most with the audience.

Reflecting

I’ve grown up getting my hair done by Alison at Untangled, getting cuts specific to my hair’s texture and needs. This project allowed me to work with a studio I know and love while honing my content creation and strategy skills. 

By introducing structure, consistency, and a balanced content mix, the account transformed, yielding real results:

  • 15% increase in followers

  • 1500% increase in views within the first 6 months

  • 2500% increase in accounts reached within the first 6 months

Through this experience, I strengthened my ability to develop and execute social media strategies, create content tailored for engagement, and adapt based on performance insights. This project reinforced my interest in social media as a space where design, strategy, and storytelling intersect and showed how thoughtful content can significantly expand a brand’s reach and impact.
