Overview

The airline industry connects billions of people globally each year. In 2023 alone, airlines carried approximately 4.4 billion passengers across more than 35 million commercial flights. Travel via plane is one of the best and most popular ways to explore the world and connect with different cultures, however, the industry is facing growing scrutiny around environmental impact, accessibility, and passenger experience.

Avyn Airlines was created as a conceptual airline brand that reimagines how an airline can visually communicate connection, movement, and responsibility. Rather than focusing solely on transportation, the brand centers around storytelling through motion and travel, celebrating the journeys that connect people across the world.

This branding project explores how a cohesive identity system could extend across various passenger touch points, from the airport to the smallest in-flight details.

The Problem

Despite the scale and influence, the airline industry faces growing public concern around environmental impact, customer care, and safety. Without a clear message easing concerns, travelers could perceive air travel as a headache that may be doing more harm than good. Branding of many popular airlines prioritize efficiency and recognition but fail to form an emotional connection with passengers.

Some key issues include:

  • Airline branding that lacks narrative and emotional connection

  • A travel experience that sometimes feels transactional rather than memorable

  • Inconsistent visual systems across passenger touchpoints

  • Limited communication around sustainability efforts

The Objective:

To design a conceptual airline brand that emphasizes connection, responsibility, and the travel experience through a storytelling-focused visual identity. The goal was to create a flexible and cohesive branding system that meets passengers across multiple touchpoints. With Avyn it was important to explore ways to communicate sustainability initiatives and a customer-first attitude by emphasizing the importance of the journey.  Visually it was important to incorporate elements that nod to flight paths and movement.

The Brand

The Avyn Airlines identity was built around the idea of the importance of the journey. The name “Avyn” pulls from the word aviation evoking a modern yet soft tone. The typography is clean and modern with visual references to flight paths and directional movement. The color palette is designed to feel responsible and trustworthy. The identity system was designed to scale across environments ranging from aircraft exteriors to small printed materials.

Initial Sketches

By sketching I was able to plan iterate multiple versions of Avyn’s potential logo, packaging, and signage. This part of my process was essential in planning for problem solving, seeing what worked and what didn't quickly on paper before moving to the computer.

Logo Animation

Motion plays an important role in reinforcing the idea of travel. The logo animation follows the path of a plane traveling across the sky, tracing a route before resolving into the Avyn wordmark. This animation can be used in a variety of places like promotional materials, in-flight entertainment systems, and mobile booking platforms. The goal was to create a moment of visual storytelling that reinforces the brand’s focus on motion and connection.

In-Flight Food & Napkins

When snacks are brought out during a flight they can serve as a passenger touchpoint that reinforces brand presence in subtle ways. In-flight food packaging and napkins were designed to extend the identity system while maintaining practicality and sustainability. 

The design uses similar layouts to other brand elements to maintain consistency. It also utilizes the arch of the “A” as a window to the snack inside, putting a fun twist on your typical airline snack packaging. These materials were designed to feel modern and cohesive with the broader brand system.

Promotional Signage

With airport signage being one of the most visible and active brand touchpoints for airlines, an eyecatching design that reflected the brand’s mission of the importance of the journey. Promotional signage for Avyn Airlines again features the arched flight path cut-out revealing destinations underneath. This easily repeatable design can be swapped out with different locations to feature all the journeys Avyn Airlines can take you on.

Boarding Pass

The boarding pass prioritizes clarity and visual hierarchy while also staying true to the brand's identity. Avyn’s boarding pass was designed with a clear hierarchy in mind for quick scanning at crucial moments. The pass still maintains consistent and playful branding elements to elevate it from a ticket to a keepsake. The result is a boarding pass that sparks joy while improving usability for travelers moving quickly through the airport.

Plane Wrap

The plane’s exterior is the largest canvas for airline branding. The Avyn plane wrap translates the brand’s visual language to a large scale while remaining instantly recognizable from a distance. By utilizing all of the brand colors the wrap maintains consistency. Flight path inspired lines represent the journey from location to location. The design balances simplicity with motion, creating an aircraft appearance that feels dynamic while maintaining strong brand recognition.

Reflecting

Designing Avyn Airlines let me explore how branding systems function across a wide range of real-world applications, big and small. Rather than designing a single logo or visual, this project prompted me to think holistically about how a brand adapts throughout multiple touchpoints.  

Through this project, I focused on strengthened my ability to:

  • Develop narrative-driven brand systems

  • Design identities that function on both a small and large scale

  • Maintain consistency across multiple touchpoints

This project also encouraged me to think critically about how brands in industries, like aviation, can communicate values such as sustainability, accessibility, and global connection. Their audience may be wary from past experience or from what they’ve heard online. Creating a brand that puts those worries to ease is important in today’s climate. Avyn Airlines represents an exploration of how thoughtful branding can transform an everyday travel experience into something more meaningful, memorable, and visually cohesive.
